How can your belly button help not take criticism so personally?

Highly Sensitive People either shut down when they are criticized or they attack. There has got to be a happy medium. Here are some tips to help you deal with the times you want to run or attack.

1. Try to see it from the other person’s point of view.
Put yourself in the shoes of the criticizer. It is not ALWAYS about you. Ask questions and clarify. Be curious not defensive. Ask them if there is anything else they want to say so they feel heard, and you get the whole store. Do not attack or try to defend yourself.. just observe. If it helps, imagine there is a pink light infront of you filtering it through love before the energy reaches you.

2. Realize that the criticism might be helpful. See it as an observation instead.
You can simply ask the person if what they are about to continue saying is meant to help them or hurt them. They will change their tone right away and you can be assured you are not being crucified. Listen without judging. Did you not want to improve yourself?

3. Give it some time to recover, but not too much time
2 or 3 minutes is enough. Smile, even a forced smile starts to release seretonin the feel good drug of your brain.
They are entitled to their opinion. You cannot say you believe in free speech but only if their opinion matches yours. Acknowledge their opinion, accept it as their truth not yours, and adjust if you have to... even if it is moving away from them a bit.

Lastly, keep your head looking at them, but turn your hips so your belly button is not facing them. This stops their energy from entering your body. This happens at the belly button. You can turn your hips while keeping eye contact so you don't look dismissive. It keeps their anger or sadness out of you so you can remain calm. Behind the belly button is your sacral chakra, your emotional centre.
